Margaret Synan-Russell

I have been working with ceramic art most of my life, and in graphic arts and glass on and off for a few decades. I was a teacher and now a full-time studio artist. I have been in museum and galleries in Oregon, Washington, Tennessee, and New York. I take part in group shows and sales. I love the community and energy that comes from sharing art with other artists and communities.
I have had an art practice for over 45 years. My love for creating art pieces began in high school, and through my travels around the country, over a few relocations and decades, I maintained a space in my life for making things, tinkering, and creating art. I came to Portland, Oregon, to visit a friend in 1985, and within a short time, I made it my home.
My artwork is influenced by the landscape, people, politics, and spirituality. My studio is my refuge, a place of purpose, my think tank, and processing center. Every image I make has a story behind it, and I love it when the viewer finds their own story in it. I want to bring a sense of wonder and beauty to people.
I am a member of the Three Rivers Artist Guild, the Oregon Potters Association (OPA) and the Pacific Northwest Sculptors Guild, I have had the good fortune to be the president of OPA, run Ceramic Showcase, and volunteer with an exceptional group of artists. I have won gallery awards and was the Oregon State Primary Art Educator of the Year several years ago.
